Daring to Hope

Session 5.48 for December 1, 2013

As we begin the Advent season, we hear from the prophet Isaiah who is speaking a message of hope to the Israelite people. Although many of us may live comfortable lives, our world is certainly far from the peace that God calls us to. Hope of a better world is not just a feeling or a desire. As Christians, we are responsible for translating hope into action.

Seeking Unity

Session 5.47 for November 24, 2013

Today's text is full of beautiful imagery that reminds us of important events in the history of ancient Israel. In it, the prophet Jeremiah is frustrated with the kings of Judah because they have failed to care for God's people. Jeremiah is frustrated because these leaders have nurtured division and have allowed the people to lose connection with one another. What divisive activities do we participate in today? How can we foster unity and hope?

Why Does it Matter?

Session 5.46 for November 24, 2013

Last week, we saw the Israelites rebuilding the temple in the book of Haggai. This week, we see that the Israelites have completed the temple and wholeheartedly worshipped God. Yet, the honeymoon period has faded, and the Israelites are struggling with the idea of worshiping God and being blessed for their righteousness in the midst of a world that is full of unrighteous people who are prospering while the good people suffer. The juxtaposition of wholeheartedly following God’s will and living a prosperous life is something that we still struggle with today.

Get Your Priorities Straight!

Session 5.45 for November 10, 2013

This week we continue our look at some of the shorter prophetic books in the book of Haggai. Haggai prophesied to the Israelites who had returned from exile in Babylon to a completely destroyed Judah. As they worked to rebuild their lives, their priorities were out of line — instead of putting their energy into rebuilding the house of God and focusing on the one who brought them out of Exile, they focused on o building their own houses. Haggai assures them that if they get their priorities in line, they will feel more at ease about their particular situation.

Righteousness As Relationship

Session 5.44 for November 3, 2013

Today’s session is the first in a three week series looking at some of the minor prophets in Scripture. Today we visit Habakkuk and glimpse an exchange between Habakkuk and God. From Habakkuk, we can gain a greater understanding of God’s desire for justice and righteousness in God’s people as well as God’s presence even in the midst of terrible times.
