Can These Bones Live?

Session 7.21 for May 24, 2015

This text is one of the most hope-filled texts in the book of the prophets. Ezekiel's message is that God can always bring new life. God's breath gave life to the first humans, God's breath made the dry bones live, and God can breath life into the most desperate of situations in our lives and in our world.

As we discuss that love today we are reminded that when we hold on to love and refuse to share it, we are can find ourself disconnected from all that God has for us.

The world calls us to be certain ways, to buy certain things, and love certain people. The world pressures us in ways that we often cannot even identify. The author of 1 John knows that when we learn to love as Jesus loved and when we give ourselves over to surrendering to Christ in our lives, we gain the power to be set free from the expectations of the world and into the loving embrace of God.

What the World Needs

Session 7.18 for May 3, 2015

Maybe Dionne Warwick said it best when she sang, "What the world needs now is love, sweet love." In 1 John, we are continuing on the theme of love and we are challenged to trust the idea that love can caste out all fear. The challenge is that when we can learn to let love be our first response, then we will overcome the fear that keeps us broken in life.

Session 7.17 for April 26, 2015

How far do we need to go to show that we love in the way that God loves? The author of 1st John expects us to be willing to go as far as Jesus went. We must be willing to die for our neighbor to love as God loves. And while this may feel extreme, the author also suggests that when we see someone in need and have the means to help, we must help. If we do not help then we cannot claim to carry the love of God inside of us.
