Who Do You Judge?

Session 5.43 for October 27, 2013

Today’s session marks the end of our eight week study in the Gospel of Luke. We hear the parable of the Pharisee and the Tax-Collector. When we unpack this story and examine how it applies to our lives today, we are reminded of the dangers of judging ourselves against others. We live in an “exocentric” culture where most of our time, energy, and thoughts are reflected outward. While Christians are supposed to be considerate of others, this mindfulness too often turns into comparisons of who is better or who is worse. In today’s session, we will explore our own judgments and how we can be free to be ourselves with God.

Persistence for Justice

Session 5.41 for October 20, 2013

In the parable of the persistent widow and the unjust judge, we learn that justice is part of God’s design for our world. We can juxtapose the unjust judge against a God who is even more loving, caring, and desiring for us to have what we need. When we look around our world, however, we do see a great amount of injustice. In today’s session we will explore the concept of justice, how we can have faith in the midst of injustice, and how we can promote justice in the world.

Healing Gratitude

Session 5.41 for October 13, 2013

As we continue in our journey through Luke's gospel, we find Jesus sharing another example of what faith looks like. In today's story, faith looks like gratitude and the gratitude that is shown makes the one who shows it completely whole.

Faith Connecting Us To Others

Session 5.40 for October 6, 2013

This week, we continue our journey through the gospel of Luke as we look at several different sayings of Jesus. At first glance, the sayings seems to be unrelated. But, when we take the time to consider what they each tell us about faith, we discover that they are each are encouraging us to allow our faith to draw us into deeper connection with one another and with God.

Send Us Lazarus

Session 5.39 for September 29, 2013

In Luke 16:19-31, we hear a parable from Jesus that shows a rich man and a poor man living together in the same proximity yet having drastically different lives. For most of us, we could identify much more closely with the rich man than the poor man. Thus this passage could contain an uncomfortable message for us. In today’s session, we will explore how we are doing God’s work in the world, especially with the people who are most overlooked.
