Justice By Unjust Means

Session 5.38 for September 22, 2013

In Luke 16:1-13, we read a parable that challenges our ideals of how the world should work. As we have already seen – Jesus’ word is challenging, and it usually does not fit neatly into how we want the world to work. Today we will explore our own questions about how God works in the world and seek to better understand Jesus’ message to the world.

Sitting With Sinners

Session 5.37 for September 15, 2013

This week we look at two familiar parables told by Jesus: The parables of the Lost Sheep and the Lost Coin. For many of us, these parables bring comfort and reassurance of God's love and grace for all people. For the religious leader's to whom Jesus was speaking, these parables were reminders of how different there vision of others was from God's. Perhaps, these comforting parables can also challenge us to be more aware of the ways in which we judge and exclude others.

Think Twice

Session 5.36 for September 8, 2013

Today’s session from Luke 14:25-35 marks our first week in an eight-week study in the Gospel of Luke. We’re beginning by examining the radical directives of Jesus as he explains what it means to be a follower of the one true God. Jesus says, “Let anyone who has ears, listen!” Over the next eight weeks, let’s open our ears and hearts to the radical nature of Jesus’ message and to a living God that is calling us to do more and be more.

Simple Trust?

Session 5.35 for September 8, 2013

In this week's session, we hear from the prophet Jeremiah. Jeremiah is upset with the Israelites because they have stopped trusting in God and have begun to seek after their security in other gods. Jeremiah assures the people that if they continue to chase after these other gods, that it will not satisfy in the way that God can. It is a lesson for us to not place our security in things and in the approval of others, but rather to place our trust in God.

A Different Kind of Fasting

Session 5.34 for August 25, 2013

Do you fast? In today's text, the Israelites were proud of their fasting, but the prophet Isaiah tells them that fasting and failing to to serve others as God calls does not work. In strong language, Isaiah condemns the Israelites for the failure to care for the poor; and he challenges them to try a different kind of fast in which they seek after justice in their actions and in their communities.
