Songs of Judgement

Session 5.33 for August 18, 2013

This week we hear from the prophet Isaiah once again. In last week’s session, we discussed how Isaiah’s ancient words are still prophetic for us today. Justice and righteousness are vital to God; yet, humans throughout history continually struggle to live justly and show righteousness. In today’s text, Isaiah uses a story of a fruitless vineyard to illustrate the people of Judah.

Caring for the Vulnerable

Session 5.32 for August 11, 2013

In today’s verses the God speaks through the prophet Isaiah to deliver a strong message to the people of Judah. This message, although originally intended for an ancient audience, could just as easily been directed to our much of our religious culture and attitudes today. We often “go through the motions” of religiosity; yet, we fail to acknowledge the true strangers, the true needy in our midst.

Christ In All

Session 5.31 for August 4, 2013

In today’s sessions from Colossians 3:1-17, we conclude our study in Colossians by examining our lives to better understand how we can be focused on heaven rather than on earth. 1 Colossians 3:1-17 reminds readers that Christ is for all people, and that all people who follow Christ must truly follow Christ by living lives that are centered on God rather than on the ever-present false teaching, temptations, and distractions. Our anger, judgments, and bad attitudes towards others should be replaced with love for God and others – compassion, kindness, humility, patience, meekness, and forgiveness.

Adjusting Our Reality

Session 5.30 for July 28, 2013

In today’s session, we continue to delve into the world of the church in Colossae as we see how our modern lives intersect with the challenges of the early church. The ultimate reality for these ancient believers and for us today is this – We are loved. We are forgiven. We are redeemed.

Christ's Sufficiency

Session 5.29 for July 21, 2013

Colossians 1:15-29 is a rich and thick passage written to a church trying to focus on God on the midst of a culture full of false teachings and distractions. Our churches today are still trying to focus on God in the midst of a culture full of distractions, temptations, and misguided ideas. As Christians, ancient and modern, we are reminded that God is about the work of reconciliation. God provides us grace, and we are called to allow God’s grace to be evident in our lives.
