Discerning Truth

Session 5.28 for July 14, 2013

In today's text we begin looking at the letter written to the Gentile Christians as Colossae. The author of the letter was concerned that they were being influenced away from the true gospel that changed their hearts the first time they heard it. As we read the text, we are encouraged to think about what the truth of the gospel is and how we know it when we find it.

From Mourning to Dancing

Session 5.27 for July 7, 2013

Psalm 30 shows us how we can embrace our emotions to find comfort, peace, praise, sadness, mourning, and glory in God. The Psalmist shows us that embracing our feelings, even the so-called negative feelings, and acknowledging these feelings before God is good and necessary in order to truly turn mourning into dancing.

Mantle of Hope

Session 5.26 for June 30, 2013

In our last session, we learned about Elijah’s encounter with God in the midst of Elijah’s weariness. In today’s Scripture, Elijah passes the torch to Elisha to continue doing God’s work. Elijah is tired and weary, but he continues to mentor and teach Elisha to have hope and carry on God’s work.

What Are You Doing Here?

 Session 5.25 for June 23, 2013

In 1 Kings 18, God works through Elijah to establish a miraculous defeat over the prophets of Baal that ends a long famine for the people of the land. Yet, in 1 Kings 19:1-5, we see it is Elijah who seems defeated – he feels alone, exhausted, and asks for God to just let him die. Many of us could probably identify with Elijah’s feelings – hopeless, depressed, at your wits end. In the midst of these wilderness times, God shows up in the silence and asks, “What are you doing here?”

Scoundrels All Are We

Session 5.24 for June 16, 2013

This week, we continue to look at the life of King Ahab, Queen Jezebel, and the prophet Elijah. In today's text we read about a story of greed and terrible injustice. In pushes us to ask the question, where are the injustices in our world and how do we participate in them?
