Do We Need Persecution

Session 6.21 for May 25, 2014

As we have walked through the book of 1 Peter, we have talked a lot about how these early Christians faced persecution. Yet, somehow, in spite of all of the efforts to stamp it out, Christianity survived. It survived because these early believers were so transformed by following Christ that they could not help but share the good news. Is it is possible, that the freedom to practice our religion today makes us so comfortable that we have lost that same passion. Do we need persecution to bring out the passion in us?

When we live as the world calls us to live, we live as individuals. When we live in the way we are called by Christ to live, we live as one community. In today's text, Peter calls on these new Christians to put away the attitudes that divide them and to pick up and put on the things that bring them together as a community. For what brings us together is much more important than that which tears us apart.

As students of the Bible, there are times when we encounter texts that seem incongruous with our understanding of the gospel message. Today's session is one of those times. As we strive to hear what Peter was saying to these early believers about their trials and suffering, it is important that we try to listen to Peter's intent.

Peter wrote to a group of Christians who were marginalized from the society in which they lived. As Christians, we are often marginalized because of the way we choose to live, the ethic we choose to live by. Peter says that we can be encouraged by what Christ did for us — that while we may not belong in this world, we can find our home when we lead in our lives with love.

What do we do when the world tells us to live one way and our commitment to Christ tells us another way to be? Peter was writing to several church who faced persecution because of their choice to follow Christ. In today's text, he seeks to encourage them in their time of suffering by reminding them that they belong to a larger and a longer lasting community — a community of faith.
