Blessings for the Journey

Session 6.11 for March 16, 2014

Each and everyone of us find ourselves on many different journeys in our lifetime. We travel in and out of roles, places, and jobs. And on each one of those journeys, we all want to know that we are being cared for and watched over. This week's text was likely a blessing for a pilgrim who was about to embark upon a journey. As you join together with your groups this week, consider where you journey is taking you now.

Silence Denies Grace

Session 6.11 for March 9, 2014

This week, in the church calendar, we begin the season of Lent in which we take time to understand our own limitations, mortality, and our tendency to act in ways that are not in line with God's ways. As we journey through this season, we are called to engage the practice of confession and today's Psalm has something to say about that. Our Psalmist has had an experience of confessing sin and experiencing the grace that comes from that. Because of the experience, he is convinced that the way to be relieved of suffering from our sin is to confess it so that we may experience God's love and grace. To remain silent is to deny ourselves the opportunity to experience that grace.

Session 6.09 for March 2, 2014

Today we begin a series in the book of Psalms. Today's Psalm likely would have been used at the coronation of a new king. As you read through it, you will hear warnings to other nations and you will hear the affirmation that God will be with this new king of Judah. It is difficult to imagine what a coronation document might have for us today. As you discuss today's Psalm, keep in mind the ways that our lives, on many different scales, are filled with conflict. Our psalmist reminds us, that even in the midst of the greatest of conflicts, God is there with us.

Over the last several weeks, we have become very familiar with the early church that began in the city of Corinth and the struggles and conflicts they faced as a community. In our final look at Paul's letter, we hear Paul encouraging this community to stop focusing on who is better and the small things, but to pay attention to the way that they participate in something so much greater.

Don't Be A Baby

Session 6.07 for February 16, 2014

As we continue to study this divided church at Corinth, we read in today’s text that Paul is so frustrated with them that he calls them babies. He believes that their jealousy and fighting and factionalism is an indication of their immaturity. He wants them to be more grown up in their faith, but expresses doubt that they posses the ability to do that.
