Trying to Contain God

Session 6.41 for October 12, 2014

In the wilderness, the Israelites began the process of truly understanding that they could not control God or contain him in any image. For years, in Egypt, they had seen gods worshipped that were visual and measurable. Now, this God they were following into the wilderness was wild and unpredictable. In their uncertainty, they reached for what was familiar, and tried to make God more predictable. However, a predictable God is not what they got. How do we try to contain and measure God. Why is it easier to reach for a God we can predict than for one we can truly experience.

God Revealing God

Session 6.40 for October 5, 2014

"Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable to you, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer." These are the words that close today's psalm that serves as a reminder of all the ways God is revealed in our world and in our lives. In what ways can others see the beauty of God's revelation in your life?

Which One Are You?

Session 6.39 for September 28, 2014

In today's lesson, some of the priests challenge Jesus and try to back him into a corner by asking him about the authority that allows him to teach as he does. Jesus, recognizing that they were asking him a question in which they could not be satisfied by any answer, refuses to answer and instead, asks his own question of a similar nature. They realized Jesus can play their game and also refuse to answer. So, as he is apt to do, Jesus tells a parable. In the parable, Jesus suggests that there are those who look like they follow God, when they do not.

Scandalous Grace

Session 6.38 for September 21, 2014

Today's lesson comes from one of Jesus' more troubling parables. It is about the scandalous grace of God. God's grace  is given to each on of us - whether we have served God faithfully our whole lives or we have came to know God in our final days or even minutes -- whether we have given sacrificially of our time and finances or if we have struggled to share what we have with God and others. Whether we spent a lifetime doing what was right or if we screwed up every day of our life. God's gifts are for each of us and God is generous. You see, God does not give based on who we are, but rather because of who God is.

Persistent Forgiveness

Session 6.37 for September 14, 2014

Jesus loves to answers questions with stories. Today's text is a great example of that. Peter asks a question about forgiveness and Jesus tells a story about a man who was forgiven, yet refused to forgive. When we look closely at Jesus' teachings on forgiveness we discover that to be a follower of Christ is to be someone who practices forgiveness. Who do you need to forgive today?
