No Quick Fix

Our world is full of people selling something for nothing. Loose weight and eat what you want, get fit with no exercise, three easy steps to complete happiness, and get rich by reading this book. But we all know that isn't how these things work and there is not quick and easy path to faith. Today, Jeremiah listens to another prophet who is trying to sell something for nothing. He has to stop and consider what the true word of God is.

Jeremiah was a prophet in the souther kingdom of Judah in the 7th and 6th centuries bce. You may have heard him referred to as the weeping prophet. He has earned this designation because he, more than any other prophet, expresses a sense of loss, frustration, and abandonment when it comes to his calling as a prophet.

In the Beginning

In today's particular selection of scripture, Paul is discussing spiritual gifts. It seems that the people at the church of Corinth all thought what they brought to the table when it came to doing church was extra special — and instead of using it to serve and unify the church, they allowed their feelings of specialness stir up division in the church.
