God Came for Justice

Session 6.51 for December 21, 2014

On this fourth Sunday of Advent, we are getting closer to celebrating the birth of Jesus. We will open our presents and eat good food. Yet, Jesus did not come into this world to simply give us the warm and fuzzy feelings each December. Jesus came to this world to transform it, to bring those on the outside to the inside, to raise up those who are low and bring down those who are mighty; to make those who seem to us as expendable know their worth. For those of us who tend to look over those in this world who are on the margin, Jesus came to transform us as well.

Joy, Prayer, Thanks

Session 6.50 for December 14, 2014

In the book of 1 Thessalonians, Paul writes to encourage early Christians as they re-imagine what it means to wait on the return of Christ. His aim is to tell them that though they are waiting longer than they expected to, they could endure by seeking joy, prayer, and showing thanks.

Challenged to Hope

Session 6.49 for December 7, 2014

The season of advent is a known to us to be a season of waiting in anticipation for the coming of Christ. Our hope lies in belief that when Christ returns, the broken places in our world will be made whole. The question that the author of today's letter is dealing with has to do with how we are supposed to live as we wait for that time to come.

Honest Lament

Session 6.48 for November 30, 2014

Have you ever felt like you were waiting on God to show up? Have you ever felt like crying out to God in sadness or grief or frustration? The author of today's text is doing just that. Today, we live in a religious culture that does not often encourage this kind of honest conversation with God — however, when we look through the bible, being honest about one's experience with God, even if it is a negative experience, is a strong tradition in scripture. Expressing lament is an important part of faith in the bible and no one who engages it is condemned for being honest with God.

The Good Shepherd

Session 6.47 for November 23, 2014

What does is it take to be a good leader? How are we able to judge if someone is a good leader or not? In today's text, Ezekiel condemn the leaders of those who are in exile in Babylon because they have been more concerned with their own well being than the well being of those they are charged to lead, protect, and nurture.
