Changing Systems

Session 5.08 for February 24, 2013

In this passage, we see how Jesus was rejected by the current power structure and a society that refused to move with God to bring about change. When we look back on these verses with the knowledge of Jesus’ resurrection and the impact that Jesus has on our lives, we may scoff at the ignorance and corruption of Jerusalem, King Herod, and the religious leaders of that time. Yet, today, in our personal lives and in the institutions that we are part of, we may be refusing to listen to Jesus’ message.

Wilderness People

Session 5.07 for February 17, 2013

We all face temptation in our lives and as we learn in today's session, Jesus was no different. In his case, the temptations he faced in the wilderness served to help him clarify who he truly was going to be and how he was going to minister. How do your temptations define who you are?

Shiny, Happy People

Session 5.06 for February 10, 2013

In today's story, Moses if found spending quite a bit of time in God's presence on the top of Mount Sinai. As a result, the people see his face literally shining! He is truly changed by his experience with God on the mountain. Our faces may not shine, but our lives are transformed when we regularly make the time to be in God's presence.

When God Calls

Session 5.05 for February 3, 2013

For the third week in a row in our FaithElement sessions, we hear a word from an Old Testament prophet. These prophets challenge our comforts and call us to live a life that is oriented towards God. In today’s passage, God calls Jeremiah to be a “prophet to the nations.” It may sound glamorous to us, but in reality, Jeremiah was anointed with divine words that were difficult for people to hear. Jeremiah was outcast for speaking the truth. We, too, are called, as Jeremiah was called to speak truth and let God’s words flow from our lips. Yet, too often, we ignore the call in favor of the comfortable road.

A Community Listens

Session 5.04 for January 27, 2013

In Nehemiah 8:1-10, Nehemiah reads the words of the law to the people, and they are transformed by the proclamation. They find themselves lacking when they see how far they have strayed from the law; yet, Nehemiah’s words remind them that God is a place of safety from which we draw strength to have joy instead of mourning, hope instead of fear, redemption instead of punishment.
