Advocates Wanted

Session 5.03 for January 20, 2013

In Isaiah 62:1-7, we hear the prophet Isaiah reminding the people that their desolation will be restored into belonging. These words are a powerful reminder that God is a God who restores even the worst of situation. They also remind us that, like Isaiah, we must not keep silent. As followers of a God who restores, we must also be about the business of restoration, and that starts with standing up for those who are hurting, cast out, and in need of God’s restoration.

God Has Not Forgotten

Session 5.02 for January 13, 2013

In last week’s session, we discussed hope and the role that hope plays in our lives. In today’s session, we will discuss how God is present with us even when it is hard to hold onto hope. In the midst of difficulty and hard times, the words of Isaiah 43:1-7 remind us that God is present with us in our suffering. God has been with us since the beginning and God will be with us throughout eternity.

Light of Hope

Session 5.01 for January 6, 2013

The prophet Isaiah’s words in Isaiah 60:1-9 are words of hope to a hurting group of people. Their treasured past is in fragments, and there is little joy in the present. The home that they are returning to is nothing but rubble and rebuilding is full of backbreaking labor and painful memories. Although most of us today have not experienced anything like being displaced from our nation or losing everything, we are a people who are hurting – hurting for loved ones who are lost, memories that are just memories, homes to which we cannot return. Tragedy still abounds in the world today. As we have just celebrated Christmas and the New Year, a time in which we look towards the celebration of Christ’s birth and a time in which we look forward to what the New Year brings. Hope is what sustains us and keeps us looking for the light even when darkness is threatening to swallow us.

Growing In Faith

Session 4.53 for December 30, 2012

After the majesty and awe of the Christmas scene with baby Jesus in a manger, he grows up. In Luke 2:41-52, we hear the only story of Jesus’ childhood as he leaves his parents’ side to visit the temple. In this account, Jesus illustrates his understanding of divinity and God’s claim on his life. Joseph and Mary do not understand; yet Mary cherishes these things in her heart as she has faith that transcends understanding. Mary shows us that even when we do not understands, God’s revelations are still meaningful and worthy of remembrance.

God Incarnate

Session 4.52 for December 23, 2012

In Luke 1:39-55, we hear of a story of two women who remarkably became vessel’s for God’s powerful messages and helped usher God’s Kingdom into flesh. Just as these women were used in amazing ways to further God’s Kingdom, God is now calling us to be part of this Kingdom on Earth. With Christmas so close, Mary’s song of praise is a powerful reminder that God’s Kingdom is life changing on a more fundamental and awesome level than any holiday celebration. God’s Kingdom is not relegated to a holiday or a people group. Rather, God’s Kingdom is for all nations and all people. It can and should be life-changing for all of us.
