Why Serve God?

Session 4.41 for October 7, 2012

In today’s lesson from Job, we hear about a good and wise man who faced incredible loss and suffering. We glimpse a conversation between God and an Adversary in which God allows Job’s suffering. We hear Job’s wife asking her husband to “curse God and die” to which Job replies “Shall we receive the good at the hand of God, and not receive the bad?" For much of Job’s life, he was a faithful and blameless man who received many blessings and was loyal to God. At this point in his life, Job is experiencing great pain and loss, yet he is still loyal to God – even when the blessings have dried up.

A Brave Woman

Session 4.40 for September 30, 2012

The book of Esther contains a story of royalty, intrigue, and danger. It reads much like a soap opera that reaches across the centuries. Yet, when we look deeper into the story of Esther, we see a people group that was threatened with genocide and women for whom speaking up could mean banishment or even death. We see a Jewish woman who finds herself the wife of a king who is allowing his officials to persecute Jews. We see this woman, Esther, find courage, seeing her life unfolding for “such a time as this” and speaking up to her husband to save her people. When we look at this story, we can understand that there are times today when we might be in the right place at the right time, whether it be by chance or divine intervention, when we are given a chance to be courageous for God and for humanity, we can be like Esther – brave and bold – even when it means taking great risks.

Woman of Valor

Session 4.39 for September 23, 2012

Proverbs 31:10-31 describes the perfect woman. This woman is like superwoman – overseeing the household, raising well-behaved children, managing money – this is the kind of well-rounded and successful person that all of us, men and women, wish we could live up to. This is the kind of person who lives in the way of wisdom and is blessed by God. For us, looking at this personification of wisdom in Proverbs 31 can seem like an impossible example. Yet, these verses are showing us what we could strive for if we live our lives out of wisdom rather than foolishness. Being like this woman means that we are searching for God’s heart, living out of the fullness of who we are, and not allowing others to define us. Being wise and successful is not about having every item on our to-do lists checks off. It’s about seeking a life that is pleasing to God.

Woman Wisdom

Session 4.38 for September 16, 2012

Proverbs 1:20-33 personifies wisdom into a woman who is crying out to the people to heed wisdom and make good choices. She does not promise that wisdom is going to make life perfect, but paving the road with wise choices help to make it much smoother when hard times do come.
