A Celebration of Love

Session 4.36 for September 2, 2012

Song of Songs 2:8-15 gives us a glimpse into the hearts of two people who are falling in love with each other. We see joy blossoming, hear sweet words whispered, and imagine the rush that these two people must feel as they are around each other. This experience is a holy and beautiful time of two people coming together to learn to love each other in a way that is pure, holy, and God-given. Too often in today’s media love is twisted to mean sex, good looks, or material possessions. In fact, we have so many bad examples of “love” in our culture, that many of us don’t know to imagine these verses from Song of Songs. Our lesson today reminds us that love is a gift. The bonds that we have between God and each other are sacred. These bonds can also be joyful and beautiful.

God's Armor

Session 4.35 for August 26, 2012

Ephesians 6:10-20 is the familiar passage of the Armor of God. This passage gives us a visual illustration of putting on God’s armor as we go into the world. This is not a passage inciting us to violence or promoting a romanticized notion of war. Rather, Paul is reminding the church at Ephesus and modern readers that our true protection against the evil and pain in the world is not metal or swords. Rather, true protection involves truth, righteousness, peace, faith, salvation, and scripture.

Living Well

Session 4.34 for August 19, 2012

In Ephesians 5:15-20, Paul reminds the church at Ephesus of the three things that are important to live a Christ-centered life: be wise, be understanding, and be filled with the Holy Spirit. The original readers of these verses was the church at Ephesus. Paul’s words held weight in the context of first century culture. Although faith is not a checklist of to-do items, these instructions can and should hold weight for us today.

Living in Community

Session 4.33 for August 12, 2012

Church is a place where many different people are supposed to come together. We know we are supposed to value differences and promote each person’s worth, but it’s much easier said than done. In today’s verses, we read the words that Paul writes to the church in Ephesus. These words are true also true to us today. Just like the church in Ephesus, we are learning to live in community while embracing differences and exploring the emotions and frustrations created by the messiness that comes with community.

Striving Toward Unity

Session 4.32 for August 5, 2012

In our churches and groups, we come together often to talk about God and faith. We know that being part of a community is an important part of the Christian faith. In Ephesians, Paul reminds us that this community can be messy and difficult. This community is still, however, vital to our growth. We have different talents, beliefs, opinions, and ideas. Sometimes, we are going to clash with each other, and it might not be pretty. Part of living in community means embracing others just as they are and understanding that differences are part of what makes God’s community so rich.
