Making Just Choices

Session 4.46 for November 11, 2012

In the story of the widow’s mite, we see a woman who freely and faithfully gives of herself to further the Kingdom of God. When compared to others, the monetary value may have been puny, but the value of her faithfulness, dedication, and selflessness is priceless. In our world, we have many conveniences and resources. We may give what seems like a lot, but our contributions are often out of habit and do not reflect an actual impact on our lives.

Love God, Love Neighbor

Session 4.45 for November 4, 2012

In today’s passage from Mark 12:28-34, we see Jesus answering the question of the religious leaders:  “What is the greatest commandment?” Jesus answer reveals what many Jewish leaders already knew – that we are to love God with all our heart, soul, and mind and love our neighbor as ourselves.  We know this commandment well, as did the scribes.  Yet we, like many in Jesus’ time, don’t do a good job of embodying this commandment even though it is the greatest commandment, from which all other commandments stem.

No Answers, But Presence

Session 4.44 for October 28, 2012

For the past few weeks, we have discussed the story of Job, a man who lost everything, lived in anguish, and never stopped seeking God in the midst of his pain. Last week, we saw that Job began to ask God questions, and we talked about the questions that we have for God. We saw that God answers Job’s questions with more questions. This week, we see Job settling into God’s presence and feeling God in the midst of the pain and anguish. Then, we learn that there is a light at the end of the tunnel – Job’s suffering and torment finally gives way to blessings. Job surely does not forget his experiences. Rather, these experiences leave Job with a deeper sense of faith and awareness of God’s presence.

Questions For Answers

Session 4.43 for October 21, 2012

For the past couple of weeks, we have been looking at the story of Job. Job went through terrible struggles and cried out to God, but still maintained his faith. In today’s scripture, we hear Job asking questions of God. God shows us to answer Job, but God’s answer consists of a whirlwind of more questions.

Moments of Absence

Session 4.42 for October 14, 2012

In today’s lesson Job feels overwhelmed and at a loss for the terrible calamities in his life. Last week we learned his life is hanging in the balance due to a conversation between God and the Adversary. Today, in chapter 23, Job experiences the depths of pain, loss, sadness, regret, and suffering. He feels as if God abandoned him. He searches his heart for God’s presence but finds absence and emptiness. All Job wants is to find God so he can offer up his complaints – surely God will then help Job in this time of need!
