The Inner Life

Session 4.01 January 1, 2012

In our text today, Joseph and Mary seem to be stopping off in Jerusalem on their way to Nazareth from Bethlehem shortly after Jesus has been born. Luke either does not know about the Holy Family’s trip to Egypt, or he simply chooses to leave it out of his telling of the story. Mary and Joseph stop in Jerusalem to participate in the rituals following the birth of a child as all good Jewish families would do.

God With Us

Session 3.52 for December 25, 2011

Today’s text  Isaiah 9:2-7. Many of us could quote parts of this text from memory thanks to Handel’s, Messiah. “For unto us a child is born,” has become synonymous with Christmas time and the birth of Jesus. However, the birth of Jesus is likely not what Isaiah was thinking about when he wrote this passage. Rather, he was likely hoping for someone who would save Israel from the trials it was facing in his lifetime.

God In a Box

Session 3.51 for December 18, 2011

In our text today, God promises that no matter what God will never leave David or his offspring and that David’s line will never end. We all see God resist David's desire to build a temple for God. We are reminded during this Advent Season that the Christ-child would be called Emmanuel, “God with us.” Yet another reminder that God was willing to become flesh and walk among humanity, as one of us. God is always leading us on our journey of life. Will we follow or try to make God fit into our plans?

Opening Up To God

Session 3.49 for December 4, 2011

Isaiah reminds us that God is always constant. We can look to God, even when we feel outcast and ostracized from our community.  Isaiah reminds us that in those times, God does not leave us. Isaiah calls us to prepare a way for God to come to us.
