God's Commands

Session 4.11 for March 11, 2012

In Exodus 20:1-17, God gives the Israelite people the Ten Commandments.  Most of us are familiar with these commandments.  We can read about Jesus summing up these commandments in the New Testament with “The greatest commandment is to love God and the second greatest is to love your neighbor as yourself.”  These commandments were not given to be used by a judge in a court.  Rather, they were given to give an identity and structure to the Israelites in a way that separated them from other people groups and showed that they were living to God’s standard rather than humanity’s standard.  In today’s world, these commandments still influence our identity as Christians.

God's Reminder

Session 4.09 for February 26, 2012

In Genesis 9:8-17, brings us to the aftermath of the great flood.  God makes a covenant with all of creation. Surely, our culture today is no less wicked than the one that was wiped out in the flood. Yet, God made a promise to not destroy the earth in that way ever again. Essentially, God seemed to change his mind and commit to a future relationship with a humanity that is far short of perfection.

Boundaries and Borders

Session 4.07 for February 12, 2012

In 2 Kings 5:1-15, we hear about a man named Naaman whom God healed from leprosy. Jesus mentions this story in Luke 4:27 to make a point to the people. Naaman was not an Israelite, yet God still healed him. Jesus was telling the people in Luke that, just like in Naaman’s story, God is not relegated to one group of people. Rather, God is for everyone. In today’s world, we don’t hear a lot about “leprosy”, but, like Naaman, we all suffer from things that make us feel less than whole. Like Jesus reminded the people in Luke, God is available for ALL people, not just the ones that are part of our groups. That was hard for Jesus’ audience to hear, and it’s hard for us today. We often say we are open to all, but how are we practicing that in our daily lives? What are we doing to break down the borders between “us” and “them”?
