Living In Community

Session 3.43 for October 23, 2011

In today’s lesson, Paul is writing to the community at Thessalonica about his ministry with them. Sometimes it may feel as if Paul is bragging about himself, but often he uses illustrations from his own life as examples of how they should be in community with one another. Paul talks about this community’s motives being pure in sharing God’s Good News.

Becoming Imitators

Session 3.42 for October 16, 2011

In our scripture today, Paul is greeting the church at Thessalonica and praising them for their mature faith. He is especially proud of the church for becoming examples to believers in Macedonia and Achaia. Their lives were transformed as they began to follow Christ and it showed in the way they lived. In Acts 17, when Paul first met with the Thessalonians, they were accused of turning the world upside down. What would it be like to be accused of turning the world upside down because of the radical way we lived our faith?

Getting Along

Session 3.41 for October 9, 2011

When we step back and look at the letter to Philippi as a whole, we discover that Paul is writing to help the church live more in the way that Christ showed us how to live.  In this particular part of the letter, he tells them to rejoice, to use gentleness as a way to protect them from fear and worry, and to pray. If they practice these things, they will experience a peace from God that will guard their hearts.

A Good Christian?

Session 3.40 for October 2, 2011

In today’s text, Paul helps us understand that being a fanatical-kind-of-Christian may cause more harm than good. When fanatical devotion to belief causes us to lose perspective, we can find ourselves in a place that justifies exclusivity, hate, and violence all on the name of Christ. Is it possible that we are working against God’s hope for us when we require certain behaviors or credentials from other Christians?

Choosing Humility

Session 3.39 for September 25, 2011

In today’s text, Paul encourages the Philippians to live as self-less as Jesus did. He illustrates in the beautiful hymn-like verses 5-11, how Jesus’ life should be an example to us. Jesus lived with such humility that he was willing to always put others first and himself absolute last. What does this mean for those of us who want to emulate his life? How do we even begin to live this way?
