- What did you think of the jokes in this video? How do you think teenagers are viewed by adults in our culture? Why? Is this image of teenagers earned or is it unfair? Explain.
- Have you ever had anyone look down on you because of your age? Explain.
- Do you ever have the kind of tension with your parents like it is portrayed in this video? Explain.
- What do you and your parents seem to fight the most about? Why?
- If you could be your parents for one day, what would you change? Why?
Teaching
Read Luke 2:41-52 and watch the Bible Background Video for this session.
- How do you think Mary and Joseph felt when they realized Jesus was missing? How would you have felt in this situation?
- Why would Jesus spend his time waiting in the temple?
- Are you surprised that the teachers were listening to him considering how young Jesus was? Why or why not?
- How could his parents not understand who Jesus was even though they were raising him?
Responsibility
Play the Home Alone Trailer.
- Do your parents or guardians ever worry when they don’t know where you are? Why or why not? If you were separated from your family where would you go? Why?
- How would you feel about being left behind in this situation? What would you do with the freedom you had while waiting to be reunited with your loved ones? Would your parents trust you to be alone? Do you think trust is earned or given? Explain.
- What do the last two verses of this passage say about the person Jesus became? How did this experience shape that?
- What does the way we spend our freedom say about us? What does the way we treat our parents say about us?
- How do our actions shape us into as we grow in faith and change into the adults God wants us to be?
