Cleansing the Temple

Session 7.10 for March 8, 2015

The church is the body of Christ, and as the body of Christ, we strive to live the life of a faithful disciple. We do thing by emulating the life Jesus lived and caring about the things he cared about. How can we do this when it comes to Jesus' action when he cleansed the temple?

Backwards Logic

Session 7.09 for March 1, 2015

We often walk through this world thinking that things work in a certain way. If you work hard you will do well; if you get a good education you will get a good job; if you are kind, you will have good friends. But when Jesus talks, it often feels like he thinks things work differently than we do. His logic seems to be backwards to us. How will you understand Jesus' words in today's text?

The "S" Word

Session 7.08 for February 22, 2015

Some parts of faith are comforting. God offers grace and mercy, ever lasting love, and seeks justice for all of us. There are other aspects of faith that are unsettling or difficult for us embrace. In today's session, we are talking about submission. This is not something many of us like to do - yet it is an important aspect of faith.  As people of faith, we are called to live in certain ways. When we do, we are submitting to God's ways of being in the world. Many of us have negative associations with the idea of submitting to anything; however, when we submit to God, the result is abundant life.

Transforming Me

Session 7.07 for February 15, 2015

Have you ever had a mountain top experience? Are you able to describe that experience to others? The disciples in our text today experienced the transfiguration of Jesus and found themselves unsure about how to respond. Sometimes, we may find it difficult to know how to respond when we have similar experiences. In other instances, we may avoid having such experiences because we believe God doesn't work like that anymore. What do you think?

More Than What You Do

Session 7.06 for February 8, 2015

Jesus came to this earth, in part, to show us how to live our lives well on this earth. In today's text, we find Jesus leaving his work to go and replenish himself spiritually. It is refreshing to discover that even Jesus needed to take time to replenish himself. We also see Jesus finding his worth in more than his work. Jesus knows that his worth comes from somewhere other than what he does and when we strive to live as he did we are called find our worth in God, rather than in the work that we do.
